When I was in elementary school, one of the greatest forms of ridicule a kid could experience being called chicken by the other kids.
Whether or not it was meant as a joke, if they called you chicken, you were being accused of being a coward, afraid of doing something.
I grew up on a farm. We had roosters, laying hens, and Bantam chickens, commonly called Banty’s. They were a lot smaller than regular chickens, flaunted a variety of bright colors and had an attitude. They were good to have around because they ate lots of bugs and maintained order in the farmyard.
That’s right.
Banty’s ruled the roost, so to speak. In the context of being cowards, they didn’t deserve the name CHICKEN.
They weren’t afraid of anything.
Our Banty roosters would attack Baron, our German Shepard, chase our cats and anyone else who got too close to their hens. Pound for pound, they had to be one of the most fearless animals I had ever been around.
