Anyone who has spent more than a year in the seed business has learned that allocations and substitutions are a fact of life.

They are going to occur every year whether you like it or not and for any number of reasons.  And if you think those two dreaded words send “shivers” down your spine….just think about what it does to your customer.

In our last video we talked about What You Should Be Doing In January and a key component in your New Year strategy was confirming every single order.  But when you confirm orders it is inevitable that the 2 Dreaded Words of Allocations & Substitutions will pop up.  So are you prepared?

Don’t continue to allow the allocation/substitution problem to plague your company.  You may not eliminate them totally, but you can certainly turn them into an uncommon event, rather than an annual, gut-wrenching occurrence.

It’s January and the Selling Season is Over.

Most companies don’t like to hear that statement and most territory managers don’t want to believe it.  But the Prime Time of selling is done in most parts of the country.  Now, that doesn’t mean you should stop selling or trying to reach your goals, but it does mean you need to change your plans.

It’s January and you need to reorganize your schedule.  There are 3 main areas you need to focus on.

Having Trouble Confirming Orders? Should have been doing more Following…

Confirmation Season

The seed selling train is not going to slow down for you or anyone else.  In fact, it will continue to move faster and faster throughout the 21st century.

So many field sellers still don’t believe that today’s growers would really like to get their cropping plans in place earlier every year.  Since these sales reps don’t believe this fact they have not taught their growers the true benefits of getting those plans in place early.

As you look back on the past months, what have you decided that you need to do differently next year?

Most seed sellers tell me that the very first thing they will do is Follow a lot more planters in the spring.

They tell me that virtually every grower they visited at planting time was more cooperative, easier to work with and in a much better frame of mind all season long than those who had not had a visit during planting.
